As we slide out of summer and fall into our September schedules I wanted to share some of my favorite fitness practices and the gear to match.

I have always been a runner, I enjoy the peace it brings me, the time outdoors and the fact that I can’t quit until I get my butt back home. As much as I love to exercise, Im not great at training myself so I prefer the motivation of a group exercise class. Working in a group and under the direction of a class instructor motivates me to be at my best, challenges me to be stronger, and forces me to be responsible for my class (something about that missed class charge, always gets me out of bed).

Here are some of my favorite group exercise classes and gear:

Bar Method
99 South Street, 2nd Floor
Hingham, MA

With the use of your own body weight, a ballet bar and a few other props, these classes have offered me strength, flexibility and a stronger core. With over 120 locations nationwide, these 100% female owned small businesses focus on safety and interval training based on strength sets alternated with stretching. The movements are small and methodical and the instructors help you maintain correct posture so you protect your joints and get the most burn for those long lean muscles.

Hingham, MA
Ever heard of: Orange Nation, Fit Fam, OTbeat, Base Push All Out, Orange Zone, Afterburn? Don’t worry, you won’t need a dictionary to enjoy or understand this incredibly motivating, challenging and ever changing workout. Orange theory is a science based workout that challenges your body at an intensity where your body works harder to recover oxygen lost during exercise. This increases your metabolism and makes you burn calories after your workout, or your “afterburn”. The coaches, are not only friendly but they get to know you, your abilities, limitations and help you preform at your best each class. No workout is the same, holiday challenge workouts are my personal favorite, and you can track your results with their OTBeat technology. If you’re not a runner, you can walk, if you don’t lift weights the coaches offer low impact options, if you’re not a rower, you soon will be for the total body workout it affords. If you’re looking for a fun, high energy workout, look no further.

Hingham Running Club
Streets of Hingham+beyond

Open to all levels of runners, this Facebook organized group, meets daily, weekly and hosts run club socials. As I mentioned before, I’ve been a runner all my life, but prefer group training. This club allows me to hit the pavement and enjoy the outdoors but with the motivation and encouragement of our community. They keep you informed of local races, help you train for your own distance challenges and meet up for the occasional beer/wine/adult beverage of your choice post run. I’m currently on the mend from an injury pretending I can play soccer like a 10 year old. But as soon as my body recovers, I’ll be back!
